The water supply will cease ‘imminently’, Mr Parker-Harding added.
He said a major incident has been declared.
A spokesman for Southern Water said: “We’ve identified a water main burst linked to one of our water supply works in the Hastings area, which will likely lead to some customers losing water supply later on this morning.
“We’re working hard to repair this burst, however this is a large water main in a difficult location and may take some time to fully repair.
