The deckchair had been at the South Street Square attraction for just two weeks before the fabric was ripped between around 10 and 11pm on Saturday night.
Dave Hunt, 56 of Worthing, the owner of the nearby roundabout, was called on Sunday morning to remove it. He said: “It had been badly torn across the bottom edge and was completely unusable. It’s very sad.”

“The people of Worthing really take this sort of thing to heart and feel disheartened by it,” he said. “There have been hundreds if not thousands of photos and selfies taken on the chair, it was really popular.”
He said he was contacted by a woman who told him that she had sat in the chair on Saturday night, causing it to break, but he believes that a group of men who were seen hanging around the chair earlier may have damaged the chair by weakening it.
The fabric will need to be replaced before the deckchair can be used again.
